Dry Needling

What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is an applicable modality in a physiotherapy treatment plan. It consists of needle insertion to relieve muscle tension, decrease inflammation and improve the healing process. Our physiotherapists must be certified by the professional order of physiotherapy of Quebec to perform this technique.

Muscles can develop areas of tension, called trigger points. These points can be very painful to the touch. They can also cause referred pain in another area of the body (e.g. a trigger point in your shoulder blade can cause pain in your arm). It is important to clarify that this technique is not an acupuncture approach.

What does Dry Needling help to treat?

If you are experiencing and suffering from the following conditions, dry needling may be an effective treatment for you:

  • Joint problems (cervical, lumbar, shoulder)

  • Muscle problems (tension, stretching, overuse injury)

  • Tendinopathy

  • Migraine and tension headaches

  • Jaw problems (such as temporomandibular joint disorders)

What techniques are used in Dry Needling?

The insertion of thin, solid needles into either a trigger point or a pain area to relieve tension is one technique.

The physiotherapist may also insert the needle and leave it in place for a period of time to increase blood flow and improve the healing process.
